Sean Astin "Samwise Gamgee"
Birth name: Sean Patrick Astin
Astin was nominated for a Academy Award in 1994 for best live action short for Kangaroo Court, which he directed and co-produced with his wife, Christine. Sean's father, John Astin, was nominated in the same category in 1969 for 'Prelude'. Behind the camera, Astin is also securing a strong reputation. He has directed three short films for which he is already receiving a great deal of industry attention. His first, entitled 'On My Honor', was a 16-minute 35mm short based on his own idea about the exchange between an American and a Vietnamese soldier. His second was a far more ambitious project. 'Kangaroo Court' stars Gregory Hines and Michael O'Keefe. The film, which has made the film festival rounds, confronts the very contemporary problems facing the police and the youth of our inner cities. The third film, 'The Long and Short of It' is reported to be featured on The Two Towers theatrical release. Sean grew up on the soundstages and sets on which his parents worked. He made his own professional acting debut at the age of eight, starring opposite his mother in the afterschool special 'Please Don't Hit Me Mom'. He has also worked with his father, who directed him in the television pilot 'Just Our Luck'. He will always be remembered for his first feature film debut role in Richard Donner's adventure hit 'The Goonies'. Astin says, "The best advice my father ever gave me is: Whatever life gives you, try to create something of value out of it." Considering his accomplishments already, Astin has lived up to his father's advice.
