Ian
acted in many amateur productions at school, and his first Shakespeare role was
as Malvolio in Twelfth Night at Bolton School. He attend Stratford-Upon-Avon
theater festivals, where he saw great actors such as Olivier, Hiller, Gielgud,
Richardson and Robeson perform. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English
Drama in 1961, at the age of 22. He had decided to become an actor, because
"I wasn't fit for anything else!". He
was knighted in 1990 for his services to the arts by Queen Elizabeth II.
Ian has been a high profile gay rights campaigner since he publicly came out in
1988 in an interview on Radio 4. He is a founder member of Stonewall, a British
gay rights organization, and supports many other campaigns and education
programs.
