Christopher
Lee was born to an Italian contessa and a colonel in the King's Royal Rifle
Corps. This gaunt, deep-voiced British actor is one of the icons of the horror
film industry. With his imposing presence he has played many villainous roles
including the Frankenstein Monster, Dracula and Fu Manchu. He has played Count
Dracula no less than nine times in the cinema. His most famous Dracula role was
opposite Peter Cushing's Professor Van Helsing in the Hammer horror films.
He has rarely varied his
approach to his roles. He portrays characters who are intelligent,
unsympathetic, aggressive, humourless, ruthless and totally evil, some of
Saruman's most interesting characteristics. Mr. Lee also has an autobiography
named, "Tall, Dark and Gruesome". Interestingly, he wore a ring when
in character as the count, one which had been worn by Bela Lugosi when he played
the King of the vampires. Christopher Lee was awarded a C.B.E in this years
Queen's Birthday honours list. (Christopher
